Equipment

  • Large skillet or frying pan
  • Shallow bowl
  • Whisk
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 4 thick slices white bread about 1 inch thick
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter for cooking
  • Butter for serving
  • Maple syrup for serving
  • Fresh strawberries for serving

Instructions

  • In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and salt until smooth.
  • Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, turning to coat both sides. Let the bread soak for about 15–20 seconds per side. Thick bread can absorb a little more custard, but you don’t want it completely saturated.
  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the soaked bread and cook for about 3–4 minutes per side, until the outside is deeply golden brown and the centre is cooked through.
  • Serve immediately with a pat of butter, plenty of maple syrup and fresh strawberries.
  • For the best thick cut French toast, cook it over medium heat and wait until the first side is deeply golden before flipping. This helps create crisp edges while keeping the centre soft and tender.

Notes

• Thick-cut white bread works best for this easy French toast recipe because it soaks up the egg mixture without falling apart.
• Slightly stale bread is ideal. It absorbs the custard well and helps give the French toast a soft centre with crisp, golden edges.
• Keep the skillet over medium heat. If the pan is too hot, the outside can brown before the centre has finished cooking.
• Don’t oversoak very soft bread. About 15–20 seconds per side is usually enough.
• For the best flavour, add a little fresh butter to the skillet between batches.
• Serve this homemade thick cut French toast right away with maple syrup, butter and fresh strawberries.
