Italian Charcuterie and Tropical Fruit Salad

This Italian charcuterie and tropical fruit sharing salad is one of those colourful meals that makes everyone want to gather around the table. Buttery Boston lettuce, spicy salami, prosciutto, coppa, sweet blueberries, dragon fruit and juicy lychees come together with a bright orange black sesame dressing for the perfect mix of savoury, fresh and sweet. With all the Italian cured meats, it is hearty enough to serve as an easy main dinner at home, especially with a warm French baguette on the side for soaking up any extra dressing. It also makes a beautiful sharing salad for summer lunches, casual entertaining or a relaxed family meal.

Description

This Italian charcuterie and tropical fruit sharing salad is colourful, generous and full of contrasting flavours. Buttery Boston lettuce is topped with hot Genoa salami, Milano salami, prosciutto salami, coppa and delicate folds of prosciutto, along with juicy lychees, fresh blueberries and pieces of dragon fruit. Everything is finished with a bright orange and black sesame dressing that brings the sweet fruit and salty cured meats together without making the salad feel heavy.

Why It’s Good

What makes this Italian sharing salad so good is that every bite is a little different. You might get spicy salami and a sweet blueberry in one forkful, then creamy lychee, crisp lettuce and prosciutto in the next. The salad is also surprisingly filling because there is plenty of Italian cured meat throughout the platter. I like to serve the dressing on the side and add just a little at first—the fruit is already juicy, and you can always drizzle on more. A fresh French baguette is perfect for catching the extra orange sesame dressing left on the plate.

When to Serve It

This easy charcuterie salad is hearty enough to serve as a main dinner at home, especially when paired with a warm French baguette. It is also a beautiful salad for sharing at summer lunches, family gatherings, bridal showers, holiday brunches or casual evenings with friends. Arrange everything on one large platter and let people help themselves. It looks impressive on the table, but most of the preparation is simply washing, slicing and arranging the ingredients.

Tips and Tricks

  • Dry the Boston lettuce well. Excess water can dilute the orange black sesame dressing and make this Italian charcuterie salad soggy.
  • Drain the lychees thoroughly. Pat canned lychees dry with paper towel so they do not add too much liquid to the sharing platter.
  • Keep the dragon fruit pieces fairly large. Small pieces can become soft and disappear among the lettuce, while bite-sized cubes hold their shape better.
  • Fold the Italian cured meats loosely. Roll or gather the prosciutto, coppa and salami to give the charcuterie salad more height and make it easier to serve.
  • Spread everything across the platter. Distribute the meats, blueberries, lychees and dragon fruit evenly so every serving gets a good mix.
  • Dress the salad lightly at first. The fruit is already juicy, so add a small drizzle of citrus black sesame dressing and serve the rest on the side.
  • Add the dressing just before serving. This keeps the Boston lettuce fresh and crisp.
  • Serve with a French baguette. Warm crusty bread turns this Italian sharing salad into a filling main dinner and is perfect for soaking up the extra dressing.
  • Prepare most of it ahead. Wash the lettuce, cut the fruit and make the dressing earlier, then arrange the cured meats and dress the salad shortly before serving.

Variations

  • Change the Italian cured meats. Use a mix of Genoa salami, soppressata, capocollo, mortadella or prosciutto. Choose two or three favourites rather than buying every variety.
  • Make it milder. Replace the hot Genoa salami with mild salami if you prefer a less spicy Italian charcuterie salad.
  • Try different tropical fruit. Mango, fresh pineapple, papaya or sliced peaches work well in place of the dragon fruit or lychees.
  • Use seasonal berries. Swap the blueberries for strawberries, raspberries, blackberries or a combination of fresh berries.
  • Add cheese. Fresh mozzarella pearls, burrata, bocconcini, goat cheese or shaved Parmesan add a creamy, savoury contrast to the fruit and cured meats.
  • Add extra crunch. Sprinkle the sharing salad with toasted almonds, pistachios, walnuts or sunflower seeds just before serving.
  • Change the greens. Butter lettuce, mixed baby greens, romaine or arugula can replace the Boston lettuce. Arugula adds a slightly peppery flavour that works especially well with prosciutto.
  • Make the dressing less sweet. Reduce the honey and add a little extra lemon juice or rice vinegar for a sharper orange black sesame dressing.
  • Try a different citrus dressing. Use fresh lime juice instead of lemon, or replace the orange juice with mandarin juice for a slightly sweeter flavour.
  • Turn it into a larger dinner salad. Add sliced avocado, cucumber, cherry tomatoes or roasted red peppers and serve it with a warm French baguette.
  • Create individual servings. Divide the Boston lettuce, Italian meats and fruit among smaller plates for a lunch, brunch or more formal dinner.
  • Make it meat-free. Leave out the cured meats and add bocconcini, chickpeas, toasted nuts and extra fruit for a colourful vegetarian sharing salad.

Orange Black Sesame Dressing

This homemade orange black sesame dressing is bright, slightly sweet and tangy enough to balance the salty Italian cured meats and fresh fruit in the salad. Fresh orange juice, lemon, honey and Dijon mustard create a smooth citrus dressing, while black sesame seeds add a mild nutty flavour and attractive speckled finish. For a slightly thicker dressing, blend in a very small pinch of xanthan gum—about 1/16 teaspoon is usually enough, as too much can make it gummy. Without xanthan gum, simply give the dressing a quick stir or shake before serving because the sesame seeds and ingredients may naturally settle.

Storage Tips

  • Store the salad and dressing separately. Keep the Italian charcuterie and tropical fruit salad undressed so the Boston lettuce stays crisp and fresh.
  • Refrigerate promptly. Transfer leftovers to an airtight container and refrigerate within two hours of serving, especially because the salad contains prosciutto, coppa and several types of salami.
  • Enjoy the assembled salad within 1–2 days. The cured meats will keep longer, but the Boston lettuce, lychees and dragon fruit soften fairly quickly once combined.
  • Keep extra fruit dry. Drain the lychees well and store the blueberries and dragon fruit in a paper-towel-lined container to absorb excess moisture.
  • Store the orange black sesame dressing separately. Refrigerate it in a sealed jar or container for up to 5 days.
  • Stir or shake before serving. The black sesame seeds and dressing ingredients may settle in the refrigerator. A quick stir brings everything back together.
  • Check the texture if using xanthan gum. The citrus dressing may thicken slightly more as it chills. Let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes, then stir before adding more liquid.
  • Do not freeze this sharing salad. Boston lettuce and fresh fruit lose their crisp texture after freezing and thawing.
  • For make-ahead preparation, keep everything separate. Wash and dry the lettuce, prepare the fruit, fold the Italian cured meats and mix the citrus sesame dressing, then assemble the platter shortly before serving.

  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Citrus juicer
  • Fine grater or zester
  • Small blender, optional for blending in xanthan gum

Ingredients

Salad Ingredients

  • 2 heads Boston lettuce leaves separated and roughly torn
  • 75 g salami hot Genoa, thinly sliced
  • 75 g salami Milano, thinly sliced
  • 75 g salami with prosciutto thinly sliced
  • 75 g coppa thinly sliced
  • 100 g prosciutto thinly sliced
  • 1½ cups blueberries fresh
  • 1½ cups dragon fruit peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1½ cups lychees peeled and pitted, or canned and well drained

Orange Black Sesame Dressing

  • ¼ cup olive oil extra-virgin
  • 3 tablespoons orange juice freshly squeezed
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 1½ tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest finely grated
  • 2 teaspoons black sesame seeds
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • â…› teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

Prepare the lettuce.

  • Wash and thoroughly dry the Boston lettuce. Tear any large leaves into smaller pieces and arrange them over a large serving platter.

Prepare the fruit.

  • Wash and dry the blueberries. Peel and cut the dragon fruit into bite-sized pieces. Drain the lychees well and gently pat them dry.

Arrange the meats.

  • Loosely fold, roll or gather the salami, coppa and prosciutto. Tuck them throughout the lettuce so the different meats are evenly distributed.

Add the fruit.

  • Scatter the blueberries, dragon fruit and lychees over the salad. Try to spread the fruit around so each serving gets a little of everything.

Make the dressing.

  • Whisk together the olive oil, orange juice, lemon juice, honey, Dijon mustard, vinegar, orange zest, salt and pepper until slightly thickened. Stir in the black sesame seeds.

Dress the salad.

  • Drizzle a small amount of dressing over the salad immediately before serving. Serve the remaining dressing in a small pitcher on the side.
  • For the best Italian charcuterie and tropical fruit salad, dry the Boston lettuce and drained lychees thoroughly before assembling. Removing excess moisture keeps the lettuce crisp and prevents the orange black sesame dressing from becoming watery.

Notes

  • Use a large platter so the Italian charcuterie and tropical fruit salad can be spread out rather than piled too high.
  • Dry the Boston lettuce thoroughly. Crisp, dry leaves help the orange black sesame dressing coat the salad instead of sliding off.
  • Drain canned lychees well and pat them dry before adding them to the platter. Too much syrup can make the salad watery.
  • Cut the dragon fruit into generous bite-sized pieces so it holds its shape among the lettuce, blueberries and Italian cured meats.
  • Loosely fold the prosciutto, coppa and salami. This gives the charcuterie sharing salad more height and makes the meat easier to pick up.
  • Hot Genoa salami adds a little spice, while Milano salami and prosciutto keep the flavour balanced. Use more mild salami when serving children or guests who prefer less heat.
  • Add the cured meats throughout the entire platter rather than placing them in one section. Every serving should have a good mix of fruit, lettuce and meat.
  • The citrus black sesame dressing may naturally separate as it sits. Give it a quick stir or shake before serving.
  • For a thicker homemade salad dressing, blend in approximately 1/16 teaspoon xanthan gum. Use only a tiny amount because too much can make the dressing gummy.
  • Dress the salad lightly just before serving and offer the remaining dressing on the side. The fruit already adds plenty of moisture.
  • This prosciutto and fruit salad is filling enough to serve as a main course, especially with a warm French baguette or crusty bread.
  • Assemble the salad shortly before serving for the best texture. The lettuce can soften once it sits with the fruit, cured meats and dressing.
