Why You’ll Love These Crispy Vegetarian Tacos
Baking the tofu gives it a lovely golden finish without the fuss of frying. I especially like how the seasoned pieces hold their shape and contrast with the fresh taco toppings. It’s a simple way to make tofu more interesting, even for those who don’t usually cook with it.
Perfect for Meatless Mondays and Family Taco Nights
These baked tofu tacos are a great choice for easy weeknight dinners, Meatless Mondays, or casual family gatherings. Set out the warm tortillas, crispy tofu, and fresh toppings so everyone can build their own. I like to serve the tofu straight from the oven while the edges are still crisp.
How to Make Crispy Baked Tofu Tacos

The pressed extra-firm tofu is gently crumbled into bite-sized pieces, then tossed with soy sauce, oil and smoky taco seasonings until evenly coated. Chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic and onion powder give the mild tofu plenty of savoury flavour before baking. Mixing everything in a large bowl makes it easier to coat those rough little edges, and those are the pieces that turn especially golden and crisp in these crispy baked tofu tacos.

Baking Seasoned Tofu Until Golden and Crispy
For these crispy baked tofu tacos, spread the seasoned tofu across a lined baking sheet, leaving a little space between the pieces. I like to break the tofu into small, uneven chunks rather than perfect cubes because the rough edges develop a lovely golden texture as they bake. The seasoning coats all those little crevices, adding plenty of flavour. Give the tofu a gentle stir partway through baking to help it cook evenly and develop those delicious crispy edges.

Sautéing Bell Peppers and Onions for Crispy Baked Tofu Tacos
Fresh yellow bell peppers and chopped onions add a lovely sweetness and crunch to these crispy baked tofu tacos. I like to cut the vegetables into small, even pieces so they cook quickly and fit nicely into the tortillas. Sauté them until the onions soften and the peppers become tender, but still have a little bite. Their natural sweetness balances the savoury, seasoned tofu, adding colour and extra flavour to every taco.

Delicious Toppings for Crispy Baked Tofu Tacos
A combination of shredded cheese, golden sautéed bell peppers, and sliced black olives adds plenty of flavour to these crispy baked tofu tacos. I especially like how the warm, slightly caramelized peppers bring out their natural sweetness, while the olives add a savoury contrast. The shredded cheese melts beautifully against the warm tofu, bringing everything together. These simple taco toppings add colour, texture, and a little extra richness to every bite.

My Kitchen Tip: How to Keep Baked Tofu Crispy for Tacos
One thing I find makes a difference with crispy baked tofu tacos is pressing the tofu well before seasoning. Removing excess moisture helps those little crumbled pieces develop golden, crispy edges in the oven. I also like to spread the tofu in a thin layer rather than piling it up on the baking sheet. For the best texture, assemble the tacos just before serving so the warm, seasoned tofu stays crisp beneath the cheese and fresh toppings.

Instructions
Press the tofu.
- Drain the tofu and wrap it in paper towel or a clean kitchen towel. Place something moderately heavy on top and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Removing the extra moisture helps the coating crisp properly.
Prepare the tofu.
- Heat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly greased foil.
- Cut the tofu into small cubes and slightly crumble. They do not need to be perfectly even. Mine were more crumbled. A few rough or broken edges will actually become extra crispy.
Season and coat.
- Place the tofu in a large bowl. Drizzle with the soy sauce and oil, then gently toss.
- In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch, panko, chili powder, smoked paprika, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, coriander, salt, pepper and cayenne.
- Sprinkle the mixture over the tofu and gently toss until the pieces are evenly coated.
Bake until crisp.
- Spread the tofu in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Leave a little room between the pieces.
- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, turning the tofu after about 15 minutes. It should look golden, slightly craggy and crisp around the edges.
Sauté the yellow bell pepper.
- While the tofu bakes, heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add the chopped yellow bell pepper and onion. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened with a few browned edges.
- Add the garlic, chili powder, cumin and a pinch of salt. Cook for another minute. Stir in the lime juice.
Combine the filling.
- Add the baked tofu to the skillet with the peppers. Toss gently and cook for 1 to 2 minutes so the flavours come together. Do not cook it too long or the tofu coating will begin to soften.
Assemble the tacos.
- Warm the tortillas and fill them with the crispy tofu and yellow bell pepper mixture. Add cheese, black olives, lettuce, salsa and any other favourite taco toppings. Serve with lime wedges.
Notes
- Use extra-firm tofu so the cubes hold their shape and become crisp around the edges.
- Press the tofu for at least 15 minutes to remove excess moisture before seasoning and baking.
- Cut the tofu into small, bite-sized cubes so the crispy tofu taco filling fits easily inside the tortillas.
- Cornstarch helps dry the outside of the tofu, while panko breadcrumbs add a light, crunchy coating.
- Spread the tofu in a single layer on the baking sheet. Crowding the pan can make the tofu steam instead of crisp.
- Turn the tofu halfway through baking for more even browning.
- Sauté the yellow bell pepper and onion until tender with a few golden edges for the best flavour.
- Add the baked tofu to the vegetables just before serving so the coating stays crisp.
- Warm the tortillas before assembling to make them softer and less likely to crack.
- Store leftover tofu separately from the tortillas and toppings. Reheat it in the oven or air fryer for the best texture.
