This recipe has been in my family for at least 50 years. It is one of those recipes handed down through generations and is still one we get compliments on when served for company. It was originally my grandmothers, then my mothers and now mine. My mom has given this recipe out on many occasions to friends and coworkers at the office. Rave reviews all around when served! It tastes like there are few calories as the dessert is light, however I suspect the calories are hiding in the cake given the ingredients. Don’t be fooled if you are wanting to lose weight. My dad loves this cake but for sure it is not one we make regularly – just because of all the whipped cream which is my personal favorite.
My mom tells me the recipe originated in Winnipeg – at least to her knowledge. It is easy, fast and perfect for those times when you don’t have hours to spend in the kitchen. When I made the cake, it took about 20-minutes in total. I am a slow cook because I like to have fun and sample as I go. The sampling takes a bit of time especially when eating marshmallow cream, chocolate crumbs and whipped cream. There's many a time I think the sampling is the best part of making a cake.
Also don’t forget people eat with their eyes and this cake definitely captures the attention. This is a spectacular presentation with little effort and is best made the night before, so it has time to set in the freezer. For the one in the photo, I made it the same day but started in the morning. Just make sure your torte has a few hours in the freezer, so that it fully sets.
Crust
2 cups of crushed chocolate wafers.
¼ cup melted butter or margarine
Mix crumbs and butter thoroughly and press 2/3 of the mixture into greased 9-inch springform pan.
Filling
¼ to ½ cup crème de menthe
2 cups whipping cream
1 7 oz jar marshmallow cream, whipped
Mix the crème de menthe and marshmallow crème until smooth. Pour gently into spring form pan and sprinkle with remaining crumbs. Keep in freezer.
Note: This dessert can be brought to potlucks, but it should be stored in the freezer until ready to serve. Because it is made with marshmallow crème it can be left on the table for the dessert portion of the evening. Some people refer the dessert at room temperature. I, however prefer it frozen. Either way it is super yummy!
Guaranteed to be a hit at any party! Crème de Menthe adds the wonderful flavor of peppermint.
It couldn't be simpler to make this dessert!! There are only a few ingredients which make is super easy. The Creme De Menthe by Meaghers is a staple in our home. As well Kraft Jet-Puffed Marshmallow Creme is yummy even when eaten on its own!
Grasshopper Torte is one of the easiest recipes to make not to mention super fun!
My name is Ellen Britt and I am an ardent foodie! I have recently started this web page and blog to explore my love of food and share my enthusiasm for both taste and presentation. I have the full support of my parents and my two adoring cats who follow me around in the kitchen wanting to be the center of attention.
I hope you enjoy my Grasshopper Torte Recipe. It has just the right of mint for that touch of spring flavour!
