Soft Ham Taco with Light Crisp

Welcome to my kitchen, where creativity meets comfort! One of my favorite things to do is repurpose ingredients and turn them into something new and exciting. That’s how I came up with my Soft Ham Taco with Light Crisp—a fun twist on traditional tacos that’s perfect for using up older taco shells. The crispy ham combined with a lightly toasted tortilla gives each bite the perfect balance of soft and crisp. Whether you’re cooking for family or just looking to try something new, I hope this recipe brings a little joy to your table!

Soft Ham Taco with Light Crisp

Ingredients:

  • 2–3 slices of ham (or shaved ham)
  • 1 large flour tortilla
  • 1 tsp butter (just a small amount)
  • Optional toppings: olives, corn, shredded cheese, lettuce

Instructions:

  1. Fry the Ham
In a pan over medium heat, fry the ham slices until lightly crispy. Remove and set aside.
  2. Toast the Tortilla – Inside First
In the same pan, melt a scant amount of butter — just enough to coat the surface.
Place the flour tortilla in the pan and lightly toast the inside (the side that will face the fillings) for about 20–30 seconds until it just starts to brown.
  3. Flip for Final Cook
Flip the tortilla over and cook the outside for a bit longer, about 1–2 minutes, until it’s golden but still pliable. This method helps the taco keep its shape when folded, without becoming too crunchy.
  4. Assemble the Taco
Place the crispy ham on the inside of the tortilla (the lightly cooked side), then gently fold it like a soft taco. The firmer outer side helps it hold structure.
  5. Add Toppings
Add your favorites like olives, corn, cheese, and lettuce. Serve warm.

The art of frying the taco lies in achieving the perfect balance of crispiness without overdoing it. When toasting the tortilla, it’s crucial to use just a small amount of butter—enough to coat the pan but not so much that it soaks into the taco. Too much butter can cause the tortilla to become overly saturated, losing its structure and crunch. The goal is a light, golden exterior that holds up nicely while keeping the inside soft enough to nestle your delicious fillings.

Equally important is the folding technique. As the taco fries, carefully turn up the sides while it’s still in the pan. This step is key to creating a taco that stands up on its own, making for a visually stunning presentation. When served, the taco should have a beautiful, slightly curved shape, which adds to the experience of enjoying it. It’s a small but meaningful touch that elevates the dish and makes it feel extra special on the plate.

Once the edges of the taco have been carefully raised and are standing upright with the ham and cheese nestled at the bottom, it’s time to remove the taco from the pan. At this point, the taco holds its shape beautifully, and you can fill it with your choice of toppings. For a fresh and vibrant touch, I love adding a mix of crisp lettuce and juicy tomatoes. To complement the flavors, I recommend serving salsa and guacamole on the side—perfect for dipping or adding an extra burst of flavor. It’s all about creating a dish that looks as good as it tastes, with each bite offering the perfect balance of textures and flavors!

Get creative with your taco—there’s no need to follow the same formula every time! One of the joys of making this soft ham taco is that it’s a canvas for whatever you’re craving. Try adding roasted peppers, pickled onions, or even a drizzle of honey mustard for a sweet and salty twist. No two tacos need to be exactly the same—mix and match ingredients, play with color and texture, and let your mood guide the toppings. Each taco becomes a small, edible work of art that reflects your own personal taste.
